Hi Dave,
Recently I used crash-tool for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised,
it really looks like a very useful and handy debugging tool ;)
And I was surprised again when I figured out that it can be used to debug the
live system on the same machine. Cool!
Now I am wondering if we can teach it to debug the live guests runnning under
qemu/kvm. This looks certainly possible, qemu supports gdb remote protocol.
But. this obviously needs more work. And. Afaics crash-tool needs some fixes
anyway. See 01/10-07/10, but probably it needs more changes, so far I only
tried to audit task.c and kernel.c. I tried to document every change, but I
am very new to this code so I can be easily wrong.
So can't we teach it to work with live/raw RAM dumpfiles for the start? See
09/10 and 10/10.
With these changes I can run qemu-kvm with the
-object memory-backend-file,id=MEM,size=128m,mem-path=/tmp/MEM,share=on
-numa node,memdev=MEM
options and then do
$ crash path-to-guests-vmlinux live:/tmp/MEM@0
to debug the live guest, No need to dump-guest-memory + restart /usr/bin/crash
which can be slow.

New subject: [PATCH 01/10] introduce LOCAL_ACTIVE() helper
Add the new simple helper, LOCAL_ACTIVE(). True if crash examines the live kernel
on the same machine.
I do not really like to use MEMSRC_LOCAL; it would be better to define this helper
as ACTIVE() && !REMOTE_ACTIVE(), the last patch in series could set
REM_LIVE_SYSTEM.
But this can't really work without other cleanups.

New subject: [PATCH 02/10] check LOCAL_ACTIVE() rather than ACTIVE() in memory_source_init() path
Change fd_init() and memory_source_init() to check LOCAL_ACTIVE(). We need
this for the last patch in series.
The 1st change is obviously safe, fd_init() sets LIVE_SYSTEM | MEMSRC_LOCAL
and nobody else can set LIVE_SYSTEM if we get here.
The 2nd one should be correct even if REMOTE() is true, we check MEMSRC_LOCAL
at the start of memory_source_init().

Use pid == 1 and /sbin/init as tt->this_task instead, pc->program_pid can't
be used.
We could probably leave tt->this_task = NO_TASK, but we need to initialize
CURRENT_CONTEXT() anyway and we need something for refresh_context(), to me
"init" looks better than (say) FIRST_CONTEXT() == swapper/0.
However, this means that /init/sbin will be always reported as "active", see
the next patch.

New subject: [PATCH 05/10] simplify the "tt->this_task should be active" logic
After the previous patch the "task == tt->this_task" checks in back_trace()
and
is_task_active() lead to falsely "active" state if ACTIVE() &&
!LOCAL_ACTIVE().
This is easy to fix, but it seems to me that we can just simplify this logic and
remove the tt->this_task check from back_trace(), although I'm afraid I missed
something.
It look really simple: if LOCAL_ACTIVE() than "this_task" is /usr/bin/crash and
it is obviously running, otherwise we can never assume this if !task_has_cpu().
Not to mention that "deprecation of usage of has_cpu on non-SMP systems" looks
confusing, task_has_cpu() can work without VALID_MEMBER(task_struct_has_cpu).
BTW, I think that task_init() should use "on_cpu" if
MEMBER_OFFSET_INIT(has_cpu)
fails, but this is off-topic.

Note:
- The usage of CRASHBUILTIN doesn't look nice, we need to cleanup
this logic. I hope we can do this later, and it seems to me that
the usage of MEMORY_SOURCES/DUMPFILE_TYPES needs some cleanups in
any case.
- I can't verify this because x86-64 is not supported, but afaics
the current usage of RAMDUMP/is_ramdump_image/read_ramdump is not
right. RAMDUMP should be always set if is_ramdump() returns true,
and read_ramdump() should not be used if we set KDUMP.
But I can't test this, so the patch adds another is_ramdump_image()
block before ramdump_to_elf(). Which obviously asks for cleanup too.

am very new to this code so I can be easily wrong.
So can't we teach it to work with live/raw RAM dumpfiles for the start? See
09/10 and 10/10.

This is going to take some time for me to digest. But without my studying it
at all, there are a couple things that immediately come to mind.
First, a couple of nits about the files being modified.
I see that your overloading the ramdump.c file, but the ramdump facility was
proposed and added by companies that use a firmware-based facility for dumping
raw ARM/ARM64/MIPS RAM into one or more ramdump files, typically because they
do/did not have kdump capability with their embedded hardware. I really don't
feel comfortable conflating that facility with a remote/live QEMU/KVM memory
source. Those companies support it, and so any changes that you've added to
ramdump.c should be accomplished elsewhere.
Also, we don't want to get this confused in any way with the REMOTE_xxx
stuff. The remote.c file and remote access facility was deprecated many
years ago, but recently resurrected in crash-7.0.4 by Verizon specifically
for use like so:
- Resurrection of the remote analysis capability for use with the
"xen-crashd" daemon running on a Xen Dom0 host, which communicates
with a paused or shutdown DomU guest kernel. The daemon can be
accessed like so:
$ crash localhost:5001,/dev/xenmem vmlinux
(dslutz(a)verizon.com
I don't think you are modifying their "resurrected" usage, but just an FYI
since
you refer to it in your patches.
From a crash utility perspective, this QEMU/KVM live memory source is
a completely
new live memory source, and as such should have its own source file
and/or set of
functions, as is the case with the other actual dumpfile types, or live memory
sources /proc/kcore, /dev/mem and /dev/crash.
Now, more to the point...
Anyway, this is a great idea, and one I've pondered in the past, but is there a
concrete reason that it could not be a simple matter of plugging in a new function
into pc->readmem()? Currently there are 20+ pluggable readmem functions that exist
for supporting all of the supported dumpfile types and live memory sources.
Regardless of how it's accomplished, the plug-in basically just needs to be able to
take a physical address and a count (all guaranteed to be contained within a page),
and access/return it. How it accomplishes that task is hidden from the mainstream
crash code.

As I see it, this facility is simply another LIVE_SYSTEM memory source,
of which there currently are /dev/mem, /proc/kcore and /dev/crash. The
essential difference between them is the pc->readmem plugin:
/dev/mem -> read_dev_mem
/proc/kcore -> read_proc_kcore
/dev/crash -> read_memory_device
The CRASHBUILTIN stuff and related stuff you ran into is only there because
live system analysis typically does not require a crash command line option,
so crash has to figure what to do when a user just enters "crash".
In this QEMU/KVM live system case, it would be much easier to initialize things
based upon the crash command line option that specifies it.

But the ACTIVE() macro has been the standard since forever, external extension modules
depend upon it, etc., and so I'd strongly prefer to not change it to LOCAL_ACTIVE().
I'd rather keep the handling of this new facility segregated, maybe create something
like an ACTIVE_QEMU macro/define that can be plugged in wherever you've modified the
ACTIVE() callers where ACTIVE() alone is not enough.
And while I think that 10/10 can be useful by itself (and least for
me), this
is mostly POC which which allows to test/justify these LOCAL_ACTIVE changes
in 1-7.
OK good, so you can keep your stuff completely outside of ramdump.c, and not use
is_ramdump(), etc., and then place as many of your changes as possible in a new
file, say something like qemu-live.c. There may be redundancies between the new
file and ramdump.c, but so be it.

Correct. ACTIVE() is used ~100 times, and in the vast majority of cases, its use
applies to a live QEMU/KVM session. In the few circumstances that it doesn't, then
ACTIVE_QEMU() should be applied so that it's obvious to the maintainer (me), what
the issue is. Who know what "live" mechanism may come about in the future that
may also have its own quirks? I don't want to hide it, but rather make it strikingly
obvious.

applies to a live QEMU/KVM session. In the few circumstances that it doesn't, then
ACTIVE_QEMU() should be applied so that it's obvious to the maintainer (me), what

should also be set so that the facility falls under both ACTIVE() and ACTIVE_QEMU().
And then in the subset of cases where ACTIVE() is too broad, ACTIVE_QEMU() can be added
as a restriction.
But the above is not relevant with respect to some new extension of the ramdump.

But with any live system, crash reads the relevant kernel data structures and sets
up its picture of the system's physical memory accordingly. There's no need to
specify
where the memory lies -- it's all available in the live kernel itself.
On the other hand, typical dumpfile headers give the crash utility instructions
on how to randomly access physical memory in the dump, i.e., like the PT_LOAD
segments in an ELF vmcore. Ramdumps don't have any header information, so the
physical memory blocks have to be specified on the crash command line -- and then
crash creates a temporary in-memory ELF header for subsequent memory reads.
(or the user can specify "-o dumpfile" to transform the ramdump into a kdump
clone.

that this remote-and-live system runs under qemu doesn't matter at all. We use
ramdump because /tmp/MEM is actually the dump of the physical memory, and if
the guest doesn't crash it is as "live" as /dev/crash is "live".

I think we're still talking about the code segment in back_trace()? All that
is doing is recognizing that the "current" task no longer exists, and the
backtrace
attempt should fail. Then there's some other code that runs before the next
"crash> "
prompt that resets it to the live "crash" task that's running. In the live
QEMU
session, that will have to handled differently in both places. I don't know how
you're going to easily determine whether task still exists.

this logic. I hope we can do this later, and it seems to me that
the usage of MEMORY_SOURCES/DUMPFILE_TYPES needs some cleanups in

Say, memory_page_size(). It does "switch (pc->flags & MEMORY_SOURCES)"
and it
needs the update if we move (say) NETDUMP in pc->flags2. Trivial, but needs
another patch/discussion/etc.
Another problem is that there is no simple/clear way to tell fd_init() paths that
we do not need get_live_memory_source/memory_source_init. Unless we set
REMOTE() == T but we should not do this.
So, if REMOTE() is false, fd_init() calls get_live_memory_source() if
pc->dumpfile is NULL. This is not what RAMDUMP need, so 09/10 has to initialize
pc->dumpfile. At the same time memory_source_init() assumes that if
pc->dumpfile must at least exist if it is non-NULL. Perhaps this needs needs
some cleanups too, but this is off-topic right now.
Heh ;). and I think fd_init() is simply wrong. The problem is minor and off-topic
too, I'll report it later (probably with simple fixes tomorrow). But in short,
you can't use /dev/crash unless you are root, and if you root and /dev/crash
is modular then /dev/crash will be removed and the module will be unloaded when
the crash exits, even if it was not loaded/created by crash. Although I need
to verify this, I can be wrong.

this logic. I hope we can do this later, and it seems to me that
the usage of MEMORY_SOURCES/DUMPFILE_TYPES needs some cleanups in

the kernel module was built into the kernel -- as opposed to having to load the
crash.ko driver. I'm not sure how that is associated with this facility.
Say, memory_page_size(). It does "switch (pc->flags & MEMORY_SOURCES)"
and it
needs the update if we move (say) NETDUMP in pc->flags2. Trivial, but needs
another patch/discussion/etc.
Who said to move NETDUMP? I only suggested the REM_NETDUMP (and the other REM_xxx)
dumpfiles.
Another problem is that there is no simple/clear way to tell fd_init() paths that
we do not need get_live_memory_source/memory_source_init. Unless we set
REMOTE() == T but we should not do this.
So, if REMOTE() is false, fd_init() calls get_live_memory_source() if
pc->dumpfile is NULL. This is not what RAMDUMP need, so 09/10 has to initialize
pc->dumpfile. At the same time memory_source_init() assumes that if
pc->dumpfile must at least exist if it is non-NULL. Perhaps this needs needs
some cleanups too, but this is off-topic right now.

Yes. The whole /dev/crash driver bullshit was put in place because of
CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM.
So we pretty much had to work around it by creating the read-only /dev/crash driver.
Anyway, in the original discussions, the security folks didn't want /dev/crash
hanging
around unless it was actively being used by a root-only live crash session. Later on it
was decided that the driver should be built into the kernel.
Please, just leave it be... ;-)

concept for live systems only. If you create a ramdump file that fits within the
constraints of the ramdump.c functionality -- essentially creating a "ramdump
clone",
then yes, I guess I can understand why you would want to use ramdump.c. (as long
as it doesn't break compatibility with the aims of the embedded folks who wrote it
and use it).
If we're *just* talking about supporting live system access of a QEMU/KVM guest,
then it should have nothing to do with ramdump.c. Even if there is duplication
of effort, please keep any initialization functions, its pc->readmem plugin,
and so on in its own separate file.

"live" ramdump?
Let's get back to basics. Is is possible for the crash utility to simply issue
readmem
requests for physical memory to whatever magic you've got running on the live guest,
and have it satisfy the request? So that it would be essentially the same thing as
reading from /dev/mem, /proc/kcore or /dev/crash?
Or is there always going to have to be an actual dumpfile somewhere?

OK. So I am running the rhel7 guest on my Fedora machine and I pass the following
(additional) options to qemu:
-object memory-backend-file,id=MEM,size=128m,mem-path=/tmp/MEM,share=on \
-numa node,memdev=MEM \
so in this (trivial) case /tmp/MEM represents the physical memory as it seen by
the guest.
Now suppose that this guest crashes and qemu exits. In this case the "live"
mode
makes no sense, if nothing else it is slower.
So I can do
$ crash path-to-rhel7-vmlinux raw:/tmp/MEM@0
on the host, and it works. Sure, not that useful. I could do dump-guest-memory
from qemu before exiting and use the generated kvm dump.
"live" ramdump is a bit more interesting. I can do
$ crash path-to-rhel7-vmlinux live:/tmp/MEM@0
and debug the live guest running under qemu, when it is not going to stop/crash.
Just like I can use /bin/crash to debug the host kernel using /dev/crash, but
this guest is obviously "remote", so we need those LOCAL_ACTIVE changes in 1-7
to make it work.

I see. What I can't understand is why (2) sets KDUMP but switches to
pc->readmem = read_ramdump() instead of read_kdump(), even if it creates the
same elf vmcore.
I didn't write this code, but here's how I understand it.
(1) If the crash command line contains a memory@address reference, then it's
describing
a ramdump, and it calls ramdump_to_elf() to create an ELF header.
(2) If "-o dumpfile" had also been specified, then it creates a new ELF vmcore
file.
(3) If "-o" was not used, then it creates a temporary in-memory ELF header.
(4) It then calls is_kdump() to verify that the ELF header was created correctly, and
sets KDUMP because it needs to set at least one of the bits in MEMORY_SOURCES.
(5) If it's just using the temporary ELF header, it uses read_ramdump().
(6) If it created a new ELF kdump clone vmcore, it uses read_kdump().
As far as (5) and (6) go, certainly read_ramdump() is far more efficient than
using read_kdump() in the temporary ELF header case. As for using read_kdump()
with the newly-created kdump clone, perhaps they wanted to make absolutely
sure that it would work in the future if/when they re-use the vmcore as if it
were a real kdump vmcore, i.e., entering "crash vmlinux vmcore"? Or it could
be because the "-o clone" option was added after the initial ramdump supporting
only the temporary header was put in place? Honestly, I'm not sure.

Well, for the non-live, crashed. version of this dumpfile, it should look exactly
as the current ramdump MEMORY-IMAGE@ADDRESS implementation, correct?
As for the "hybrid-live-dump" version, I'm not sure. So for now I guess you
can
continue using the "live:" prefix to the dumpfile name. If we come up with a
more logical naming scheme in the future, we can always change it later.
2. Should I re-use ramdump.c or should I just add the new file which

Given that these *are* essentially ramdump files, you've convinced me that ramdump.c

I agree, the "raw:" prefix/mode doesn't buy too much, lets drop it.
As for the "hybrid-live-dump" version, I'm not sure.
So for now I guess you can
continue using the "live:" prefix to the dumpfile name. If we come up with a
more logical naming scheme in the future, we can always change it later.

Given that these *are* essentially ramdump files, you've convinced me that ramdump.c

I didn't write this code, but here's how I understand it.
(1) If the crash command line contains a memory@address reference, then it's
describing
a ramdump, and it calls ramdump_to_elf() to create an ELF header.
(2) If "-o dumpfile" had also been specified, then it creates a new ELF vmcore
file.
(3) If "-o" was not used, then it creates a temporary in-memory ELF header.

I didn't notice that write_elf() doesn't "copy" ramdump's into elf
file if
"-o" was not used, it only creates a header.
